Siting, Layout Planning for LNG and LPG, and Hydrogen Storage Facilities

LNG and LPG sites demand rigorous siting and fire protection decisions to control thermal radiation, flammable vapor dispersion, and domino effects, while keeping critical equipment, personnel, and neighbors safe.

Our work aligns with NFPA 59A for LNG plant location, design, operation, and maintenance, and integrates local fire code and international best practice requirements where applicable.

What we do

We perform detailed siting and layout studies to calculate and map thermal radiation and flammable vapor dispersion contours for LNG containers and transfer systems. Our analyses establish exclusion zones and equipment spacing, delivering optimized site plans that position process units, storage facilities, roadways, and occupied buildings outside defined impact areas.

Our expertise includes impoundment, drainage, and spill control design, where we define LNG impoundment basins and surface grades to manage spills and runoff, as well as LPG drainage, trenching, and containment systems to prevent fuel migration and secondary hazards.

We apply validated thermal radiation models for LNG pool-fire radiation assessments, ensuring compliance with recognized thermal radiation limits used in siting analyses.

For fire protection systems, we develop the Basis of Design for monitors, hydrants, water spray cooling, foam systems, and gas detection, integrating these with ESD systems and siting outputs so that protection systems effectively safeguard critical targets within credible heat-flux envelopes.

In LPG facility planning, we verify NFPA 58 container spacing, clearances to buildings, property lines, and ignition sources, ensuring compliance with LP-Gas Safety Rules. These considerations are fully reflected in our layout drawings and compliance documentation.

Typical deliverables

Our deliverables include a detailed facility siting and layout report featuring exclusion zone maps for thermal radiation and vapor dispersion, along with documented assumptions and compliance narratives that meet regulatory standards.

We prepare facility plot plans indicating the exact locations of process units, storage tanks, roadways, occupied buildings, and access routes, ensuring safe and compliant separation distances.

The Basis of Design defines firewater supply systems, monitors, water spray cooling, foam systems, gas detection, alarms, and emergency shutdown (ESD) logic, all developed based on credible hazard and fire scenarios.

Our impoundment and drainage plans provide engineered containment and runoff management solutions validated against realistic release and spill conditions.

We also prepare a complete authority submission package that includes drawings, calculations, and technical narratives ready for AHJ review, along with formal responses to regulator comments to support project approval and implementation
